Red yeast rice is a popular product that is being touted as a new way to reduce bad cholesterol in people. The rice is made my allowing a red yeast to be fermented over the rice. This has been done for centuries in China and has often been used as a spice, preservative and a food coloring. Traditionally red yeast rice is often used in Chinese medicine as a way to try and improve poor circulation, diarrhea and bad digestion It is often served as a dietary staple in many Asian countries.
Red yeast rice is used medicinally because it has some substances that occur naturally called monacolins. This substance is known to prevent the creation of cholesterol. There is one popular moonocolins which is called lovastatin. This will attack the cholesterol and prevent it from forming and being stored, where it can do harm to the body. This is part of the reason why Red Yeast Rice is being promoted as a natural way to reduce cholesterol.
